Adventure Assist Travel Journal Is A Must Have For Trips

Published

on

adventure assist

A twist to the classic notebook, Adventure Assist is a modern travel journal perfect for the before and afters of your trip. Mapping out your trip and keeping memories the old school way. Jot down the most important details of the trip as you are planning so you are ready once the time comes. Create a list of things to remember or missions to complete. Be ready for the accomplished feeling you get when you physically cross these things off your list. Keep quotes of silly things that happened along the way. Relive doodles of the funny dog you saw or the breathtaking view from the end of your hike.

The notebook was created by two adventure seekers, Jake Pritchard and April Onebane. Both studied abroad and have a passion for traveling with a purpose. Their mission is to “ better connect travelers to their destinations by inspiring authentic and purposeful travel experiences through streamlining planning and organization.” With that mission in mind, the Adventure Assist notebook was created. A heavy duty notebook with strong covers and thick sheets made to withstand the suitcases, backpacks and adventures it will be a part of.

Broken down into seven section, the notebook helps travelers organize and keep track of the basic necessities when traveling. The sections starts with “packing” and moves onto “to-do”, “transportation”, “accommodations”, “calendar”, “contacts” and “journal” with journal being the largest section. Each section is divided as an easily identifiable tab to quickly navigate to the section.

Packing

The first tab in Adventure Assist, Packing, tells you to “list adventure gear, regional specific clothing, travel documents and entertainment essentials for your journey.” With four pages to list what you are packing, you definitely won’t miss a thing or over pack. A couple of things we would recommend: S-hooks, ziplock bags, mini-tripod.

To-Do

Next, To-Do, is 10 pages, each page broken down into two sections. Each section is broken down into boxes: destination, attractions, activities, food and drinks. What are some things you want to do, see and eat at the destination? You will have an endless list of things you want to do on your next adventure but writing down the top 10 will help you keep track of the most important. Keep a smaller list for a higher chance of accomplishment while pulling from your bigger list when you run out. Nothing digital will ever replace the satisfying feeling of physically crossing something off of your Do-To list.

Transportation and Accomodations

Where are you staying each night? When time do you have to get there, get out and who do contact if you have a question. Necessary, if not the most important, information of every trip. Now that you know where you are staying, how are you getting there? Getting around in big cities is easy if the language is one you speak and the technology available is similar back home. The difficult but somewhat exciting times when you are visiting somewhere completely different than what you are used to, transportation will not be so easy. You may need to catch a ferry, jitney…donkey?! Keep track of what time departure and arrival is and any additional notes like how many stops until your destination.

Calendar and Contacts

The calendar section provides blank monthly calendar views for you to see your month at a glance. There is a column for notes where you could draw a map key, like emojis, and add the keys to your calendar. Contacts – great for noting who the people from each destination to call in case of emergencies. We have so many contacts in our phones we don’t remember. When a panic situation happens, you have the information you need. In a more likely situation, you lose your phone or it runs out of battery. Now you have the contact information and can borrow someone’s phone.

Journal

This is where you log your memories and experiences. The reason you are traveling in the first place. Write, draw, sketch, whatever you want in this section. Anything that will bring back the best memories from your journey when you discover this notebook on your shelf when you are 80. Instax or Polaroid would be perfect for this section. The two envelopes on each end of the notebook are great for storing tickets, airport stamp tickets, napkins with doodles on them or anything else relatively flat.

We will have our digital photos, videos, social media accounts to look back at. But the feeling from something handwritten or hand drawn is much more powerful and memory provoking than anything digital. Adventure Assist is personal and once you start writing, you won’t want to stop.

I take too many pictures. A month without any kind of adventure makes me antsy. The water is my home.

“I’m Fat Let’s Party” Guy: Life as a Celebrity Meme

Published

on

The internet has done a lot to disrupt culture.  Once upon a time, styles, techniques, communities and information were only as transmutable as cable TV and word of mouth.  When compared to the rate of change we see today, the evolution of content has moved from a slow creep to nearing light speed.  Ten years ago the lifetime of any trend in humor could last months, and before that years.  These days, you see a popular meme “break the internet” but one week later a new one is there to take it’s place.

Imagine if Charlie Chaplin had risen to fame in this day and age through the vehicle of The Meme.  Would he still be as iconic?  As immortal?

I spoke with Steven Lee… also known as “I’m Fat Let’s Party” Guy.  Steven’s meme has been sported on the front page of reddit twice and has garnered over 400k in likes and shares on social media within the first hours of being posted.  As it happens, Steven and I actually went to the same schools growing up.  However I am jealous because I cannot say that I grew up to be a world-class meme.  I got the chance to speak with him about Memeology.  Here’s what he had to say:

1.  So let’s hear about this party…

The picture was taken in 2011, I was with my friend Dave Leek. We went to Philadelphia at Drexel Factory for a concert. The head Dj was Alesso. When we got there I found out my friend Dj Dubsef was opening so we were allowed in early. When the concert started, since we got in early we got front row, right in the middle. It was crazy we were just having a blast and I saw the photographer “ATOTHE” and I just made that pose and everyone went along with it. It was great the high from just being at the concert and all the fun I was having was crazy mainly because I was completely sober. We didn’t drink at all it was just the energy that gave me like a high feeling. Definitely an amazing feeling.

2.  Now let’s hear about this shirt…

The shirt I got back in 2010 at Comic Con NY. It was at a booth called “Seibei”. They were super nice. After I became the meme I sent them an email about it. They thanked me and I told them that I ordered another shirt from them.  They said they were going to throw in some more for me. It was amazing because I ordered two shirt but when the package came they gave me three more shirts two of them were different color versions of the “I’m Fat, Let’s Party” shirt. One in black with yellow letters and one in sky blue with yellow letters too. Another note about Seibei is that when I went to Magfest 2015 I got to meet the creator of the shirt there. He was working his friend’s booth there and I haven’t officially met him before so it was great. Once he saw me he told some customer “I’m sorry but I need to hug this man really quick.” He is an amazing man, his name is David by the way. In short, I have three different colors of the shirt.

3.  Who first memed this?  Tell me about the moment you realized it went viral.

So going back to the Photographer “ATOTHE” he posted the original photo on his Facebook page. Then someone who I still don’t know posted it to “reddit” and it blew up from there. It’s funny I never heard of reddit before that. I saw the post after 14 hours of it being posted and it already had over 400,000  reblogs and likes. It was weird because in the comments some people knew who I was, telling them I lived in NJ and that I went to high school. Some said that I quote “omgz he snapchats me everyday”. The worst part of it though was the comments about body confidence saying that I have a mental problem about my body. Then there were other people arguing about it. It was pretty nuts. Also in the comments were people who started to photoshop me into a ton of different memes.  Basically the reason it became a big deal was because it made the front page of reddit and apparently posts only get the front page when it’s discussed and reblogged a ton.

4.  How old is this meme now?  How often do you see it reappear?

It’s about 5 or 6 Years old now. It has been reappearing all the time. It’s been on the front page of reddit now about 5 times and when it gets posted the meme evolves, which is cool.

5.  What has been the most surprising side effect of being a “meme guy” so far?

The most surprising part of being “that guy” is that people from all over the world knows the meme and some of them actually know who I am due to mutual friends. The funniest/weirdest time I got recognized was when I was working as a cashier for FiveBelow. These two kids age probably around 12 and 10. They made a comment while I was ringing them up. It was “oh must be a party over here”. I was confused at first but then I looked at them and I asked are you referring to the meme. Their faces lit up in excitement when I caught on. What made it weird is that their father was confused and asked what are you guys talking about. My response was that they saw a funny picture of me and he gave me the most confusing look ever. It was funny and weird lolz.

6.  What are your thoughts on meme culture and memes as a vehicle for humor?  What’s your favorite meme?

The meme culture is huge, when it first started it usually was the same pictures with new phrases on them. Now new memes come out every other week. The convention I went to had a huge meme culture following in it. There were people who cosplay a meme that just got popular only a week ago. It’s crazy but I also believe sometimes people make memes and take it to a new level. Now memes are videos too. They went from pictures to videos… now that’s huge step. But again some of the memes are just too much for me and are part of that I wanna say is stupid humor like doing the stupidest things on purpose.

My favorite meme of all time?  Arthur Fist.

7.  What do you like most about your meme?  What do you like least?

What I like most about my meme is that I met people who told me that the meme gave them the courage to go out and do things and that made me feel better about themselves. Even though I just was at a party having fun. The thing I like least about it is that some people think that I’m someone who just parties all the time and that makes them think I’m not someone who actually has a head on their shoulders. It sucks but I usually just ignore those guys because everyone has, haters am I right?

Rachel Smith of The Crafted Life, The Unicorn of DIY. Creativity is a beautiful thing, some may even say everyone can be creative if given the opportunity. The Crafted Life was created by Rachel Mae Smith based off of that belief. Like her blog, Rachel is colorful and fun. Her bright pink hair and big smile instantly grabs the attention of everyone around her. Her take on DIY is to make it fun and appealing without taking too much time and money.

The Crafted Life

Rachel Smith is based in the city of Philadelphia, Rachel is on a mission to spread the fun of crafting through social media and blogging. Five years ago, she worked 70 – 80 hours per week, but craved for something more. She needed a creative outlet. That was when The Crafted Life was born. She started the blog while still working at her full-time job, with a goal of doing one DIY per week and documenting the process.

Today, you can find Rachel Smith’s work everywhere, from Pinterest to Facebook, and her favorite – Instagram. Her feed is filled with beautiful splashes of color with her cheery personality shining through. Social media has allowed her to meet people that she would not have met otherwise. She loves her work, even with the struggles that come with it. “It’s all consuming, and it’s hard to be curated and live a personal life at the same time. It’s a bit of a trade off, but worth it in the end.” No matter the difficulties, Rachel has found a work/life balance that is effective, and she wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Aside from teaching DIY, photography is another passion that burns deep. Her pictures are meticulously created to showcase the brand aesthetic that is The Crafted Life. She uses Lightroom for photo editing and PicMonkey for quick collages. Rachel was able to combine her talents, and with the help of social media, was given the opportunity to quit her previous job and work on her blog full-time. She uses all types of materials, from rhinestones to contact paper. Her creativity knows no bounds, as you can see from this vase decorated using temporary tattoos.

Rachel Smith’s audience is especially important to her. Every post is based on quality with each subscriber in mind. “It’s really about a gut check. If I don’t feel good about a post or a project outcome, I won’t hit publish. More so than ever with all the content that’s on the Internet, it’s about quality over quantity.” Rachel encourages everyone to try DIY. If you are a beginner, she suggests starting with an easy project that only requires a few tools and takes around 10 minutes to complete. Practice allows for more difficult projects in the future. Some of Rachel’s personal favorites include this table makeover, these earrings that she wears on a daily basis, and shooting these DIY temporary tattoos.

The Crafted Life

Rachel’s schedule is filled with exciting adventures every day. “There is usually always a photoshoot happening, either for the blog or for Instagram, plus responding to emails, editing photos, sourcing props and materials, reading contracts, planning editorial content, pitching brands, writing actual posts, etc.” Rachel has expanded her brand to merchandise like the Shut Up Sassy Lip Enamel Flair Pin that you can purchase on Etsy. She loves her city and the people in Philadelphia and has no plans on leaving anytime soon. The energy is amazing and pretzels are fifty cents! For now, Philly is her home, and the city is very lucky to have her.

What makes The Crafted Life different from other DIY blogs is the focus on the audience and the abilities within each person to create something amazing. The aesthetic of her social media pages is beautiful, filled with bright colors and gorgeous photography. Her instructions are very clear and written in a language that is disarming. Rachel understands her community and speaks to them as friends through the Internet. She took DIY to different platforms, teaching people around the world about the joys of crafting. Her encouragement helps build happiness around her, letting you know that there is a friend out there rooting for you.

iPhone X – Everything You Need to Know

Published

on

2017 gift guide

Here’s everything you need to know about the iPhone X. Apple recently debuted not one, but 3 iPhones. Much has been under speculation about the 10th anniversary iPhone that Apple’s been keeping under wraps. Ironically, as soon as Tim Cook announced how Apple would “double-down” on securing leaks, the internet started leaking more and more information about the new iPhone. So by the time Apple came around yesterday to announce the iPhone X, few were surprised by the revolutionary edge to edge OLED screen. This doesn’t mean we aren’t amazed or blown away by it, we were just not surprised.

So what exactly is the iPhone X? What are it’s features? What’s it useful for? How do you pronounce it? To answer those questions, we’re going to save you countless hours of reading as well as avoid watching people’s rehash of the Apple event on Youtube. This article will show you everything there is to know (and more) about the iPhone X.

1. The Specs

Color options: It will be available in Black and Silver.

Storage options: 64GB and 256GB

Price: Starting at $999

Front Camera: 7MP with TruDepth and FaceID

Rear Camera: Dual 12MP with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization)

Processor: A11 Bionic Chip

Dust/Water Resistance: IP67

2. How is it pronounced?

Let’s start here. It’s pronounced iPhone TEN, not EX. Don’t walk around like an uneducated fool calling it iPhone X.

3. Availability

Order on Apple’s website.

4. What’s it made of?

The back is made entirely of durable glass that Apple claims should be shatter proof. Stainless steel band wraps around phone.

5. Why is it call the iPhone X (Ten)?

Because of the iPhone’s 10th year anniversary. The first iPhone was released in 2007, and 10 years later is today’s 10th year anniversary. Technically, the iPhone 8 and 8 plus should be called iPhone 7S and 7S Plus given that it’s not a complete re-design. Apple’s usual trend in naming is that an iPhone deserves a full numerical bump if and only if it’s a complete transformation. Think back to the iPhone 3 to iPhone 4 overhaul. Remember how drastic the iPhone 4 was to the iPhone 5? And who could forget the dramatic change from the iPhone 5 to iPhone 6. The iPhone 8 and 8 plus are basically iPhone 7 in terms of design with internal CPU and camera upgrades.

So why isn’t it called the iPhone 7S then? Because this year Apple decided  to break away from traditions. They went from 8 to 10 in the same year without batting an eye, so…I don’t think they care about 7S at this point.

iphone x screen

6. New Screen

The iPhone X sports a 5.8 inch edge-to-edge Super Retina (2436 x 1125 OLED display), with a pixel density of 458 pixels-per-inch, and a 1 million to one contrast ratio. Having an OLED display of this caliber means the phone can support Dolby Vision and HDR10, HDR-ready display, 3D Touch, and True Tone support.

Being an OLED screen also gives you a richer and more “realistic” black color. In a traditional LCD screen when you’re viewing a black image, the screen still has to display some level of light underneath the darkened pixel. It can’t actually turn OFF the pixel and give you true-black. In the case of an OLED screen, it has the ability to completely turn off the Pixel, giving you an accurate true-black.

The OLED display is expensive, much more than the previous Retina LCD screens Apple used. This is one of the reason why the iPhone X starts at $999.

7. Home button

No. You swipe up to go home.

iphone x dual cameras

8. Rear Cameras

Get ready, this is going to be a long one.

The iPhone X has DUAL 12 MP camera one, one with wide-angle f/1.8 aperture lens and the other has telephoto f/2.4 aperture lens. But they’re not ordinary cameras. They come with dual Optical Image Stabilization to reduce motion blur and better images in low lighting. The cameras can now record videos in 4K at 60FPS and slow-motion videos at 240FPS.  The lens can also zoom up to 10x for photos and 6x for videos.

In short, the front cameras are good…really good. Probably the best we’ve ever seen on an iPhone.

9. Front Camera (Selfie camera)

The front (selfie side) cameras are revolutionary. It’s a 7MP camera that takes better selfies than any other previous iPhones. The new Portrait Lighting mode allows users to take stunning selfies, adjust lighting in real-time, and cycle through different modes such as natural light, studio light, contour light, stage light and stage light mono. Portrait Lighting is supported by both the front and rear cameras.

The front camera is also capable of 360 Selfies and Augmented Reality, unlocking a world of possibilities for new app features to roll out in October.

The new “Selfie Scene” feature will utilize depth data (from TruDepth) to overlay your face over a variety of landscapes and scenes.

10. FaceID

FaceID stands for Face Identification. The 7MP front selfie camera can be used for unlocking your device and Apple claims it’s even secure enough to authorize Apple Pay. We’ve seen Facial Recognition in Sci-fi flicks but never imagined the day would come. Apparently Apple isn’t the first company to attempt Facial Identification. Samsung and a few other manufacturers have attempted this technology before however couldn’t make it secure enough for commercial use. Apple on the other hand, is able to make Face Identification secure and easy to use.

11. How does Face ID Technology work?

The front facing camera utilizes TrueDepth technology to map more than 50 muscle movements and points of articulation on your face. It will also adapt to your face over a period of time and Apple claims it can recognize you regardless of hairstyle, hats, glasses, facial hair, etc. It’s also smart enough to distinguish you from masks and photos of you. Is it reliable? Apple claims it’s a yes, however Face ID is currently an unproven biometric security measure. Only time will tell if it holds up.

12. A11 Chip

The iPhone X is being deployed with the all new A11 Chip. It’s a 64 bit 6-core processor, 4 High Efficiency cores and 2 Performance cores.

It’s faster + more efficient: In theory, with 4.3 billion transistors the 4 Efficiency cores are 70% faster than Apple’s A10 Fusion and the 2 Performance cores are 25% faster. In a nutshell, the new A11 Bionic chip is 30% faster and consumes 50% less power than the A10 chip. Apple claims it is the most powerful chip ever installed in a smartphone. The Neural Engine is said to be capable of 600 billion operations per second.

Good for gaming: The chip is also optimized for 3D gaming.

It can learn: The iPhone X is also capable of machine learning thanks to Apple’s Metal 2 platform.

Better Pictures: The A11 Bionic gives the front and rear cameras a significant boost by implementing Apple-designed Image Signal Processor (ISP). The new chip also allows the cameras to process pixels faster, better auto-focus under low lighting, and overall better image noise reduction.

Better Videos: The chip also has Apple-designed video encoder. This mean it can process frames faster and analyze images and motion in real time for improved video quality.

13. Better Life

Apple claims the iPhone X’s battery can handle 21 hours for just talk, 12 hours for internet usage, 13 hours for videos, and up to 60 hours if you’re just listening to music (not sure if this is through speaker or plugged in earbud).

14. Fast Charging Feature

The iPhone X is capable of “fast-charge capable,” meaning it can be be charged to 50 percent of battery life in 30 minutes. This is useful for fast moving business professionals and entrepreneurs.

15. Wireless Charging

The new iPhone X also comes with QI charging capability, meaning you can charge wirelessly. Upon release, you can purchase the Apple Airpower to charge up to 3 of your QI enabled devices at once without plugging anything in (except the Airpower mat). Pricing is currently unavailable, however you can get a Belkin mat for about $60 on Amazon. Also, more devices (including computer cases) are starting to have QI charging platforms built in.  We recently reviewed a custom computer case call the Dark Base Pro 900 that features a QI charging platform.

iphone x water and dust resistant

16. Water and Dust Resistance

The new iPhone X is both water and dust resistance. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can go swimming with this. Apple claims the iPhone X has a rating of IP67 under IEC standard. Let’s break that down so you know exactly what IP67 means.

The 6: It’s 100% completely dust resistance, so you never have to worry about dust leaking inside and short circuiting components.

The 7: The phone can be submerged up to 1 meter underwater for at most 30 minutes.

So there you have it, it’s pretty good. But don’t go swimming with it, or try to take underwater shots.

There you have it…

That’s literally everything you need to know about the new iPhone X and more. The phone currently is sold out in most retail locations. Chances are you’ll have a tough time getting your hands on one of these. Fortunately, it’s being sold in 55 countries so someone on Ebay will be selling it for a ridiculous price. But hey…you were going to spend 1K on it anyway, what’s an extra few hundred?
