Having Haters Can Be Good For Business

We all know at least one person who is always on our case and have nothing positive to say, but always seem to know what you are up to. As annoying as these people are, we can use them to our advantage.

Here are some of the reasons why haters can actually be beneficial:

Use them to gauge your own success 

The more haters you have, the better! That just means more people are paying attention to what you are doing and may actually be jealous. Don’t get me wrong, we should not be doing things just to make people jealous, but realize that they are paying attention to you for a reason. That reason is most likely that you are doing something different or something successfully. Also remember that the number of supporters you have is likely growing at a higher rate than your haters are.

If you deal with them correctly, you build your own personality 

I always say that, other than my friends and family, my haters have shaped me into the man I am today. How you deal with hate and criticism is important in today’s world, unfortunately. It is the most difficult times in my life that have influenced me the most.

It’s so satisfying to prove them wrong 

I once told someone that I would be pursuing a leadership role. They responded negatively saying, “Are you sure? Can you handle that type of responsibility?” Lucky for me, that motivated me twice as much, and the following month, I took on the roll and killed it.

Cut through the noise 

Most of what a hater says is nonsense, but sometimes, they mistakenly tell you something that can help you. It is not always beneficial to completely tune the haters out. Unknowingly and (most certainly) unintentionally, they may let you in on a way to better yourself or your company. Use their criticism to your advantage.

“If you don’t have haters, you are doing something wrong.”

This is a widely shared quote. There are multiple versions of it but the idea is still the same. People get upset when you go against the grain. Don’t let them stop you.

“Haters gonna hate, taters gonna tate.” 

Don’t ever let it get you down. Brush it off and keep moving forward, because it’s in the nature of a hater to hate.

 

In reality, we do not need negative people in our lives. Life and work can be stressful enough, without having people say you can’t do this or you can’t do that. My advice is to cut as many haters as you can out of your life or avoid them if at all possible. That being said, when they are unavoidable, use them to your advantage.

If everyone who received criticism stopped what they were doing we would have no innovators!

 

 

This is a list of a few of the people who fought through criticism to become some of the most influential people in the world:

Benjamin Franklin, Inventor – Imagine what people thought about a man who thought he could make create light from electricity. He kept working and blocked out negativity. Now you see him on the $100 bill.

Stephen King, Author – His first book was rejected over 30 times. He went on to write The Shining, It, 11/22/63, and Misery. Many of his works went on to become movies and TV shows.

Walt Disney, Entrepreneur – You may have heard of his company. His first few cartoon characters, Mickey Mouse and the Three Little Pigs, were rejected when initially created!

Van Gogh, Artist – This artist struggled a lot during his life. He barely sold his paintings and became famous after death. People thought his work was terrible at the time, but you may know him as the creator of Starry Night, Café Terrace at Night, and his famous self-portrait.

Henry Ford, Innovator – He is the inventor of the first affordable car. He is also the founder of the Ford Motor Company. People considered his car a fad at the time. Boy, were they all wrong.

The Wright Brothers, Inventors – They are the aviation pioneers who built the first airplane. These guys thought that they could fly in the air like birds… how crazy!

JK Rowling, Author – Our dear friend Harry Potter may never have become a book or movie if Rowling didn’t keep pushing on. Her manuscript for the first book was rejected by multiple publications before someone picked it up.

Malala Yousafzai, Activist – Malala is a Pakistani schoolgirl, who fought for the right to education and equality for women. ISIS and the Taliban have threatened her life multiple times. At one point, she was even shot on her school bus. She didn’t stop. Malala is the youngest person to ever receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

Steve Jobs, Inventor – Did you know Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, was fired from the company in 1985? As we know, he later joined the company again and made it the powerhouse it is today.

Martin Luther King Jr., Activist – Martin Luther King Jr. faced a lot of criticism as the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He fought for what he believed in and his words still ring true today.

 

Moral of the story, haters are going to be here no matter what you do. It is up to you to move forward and continue doing what makes you happy.

Location matters in the means of professional success. Millennials are reported to be getting married and starting families later than their parents. This means that their main focus is strictly on their professional career, so these matters are taken seriously, as they involve these factors into determining where to live. Millennials select cities that will help them thrive. This goes vice versa, cities need to attract people in order to be sustainable. The city of Camden has been successful with this process. With the increase of millennial entrepreneurs entering the city, the better the economy gets, as it is shown around the waterfront.

To create more jobs and attraction, cities must attract the job-seeking millennials. There are 3 determinants for millennials to move into your city:

Affordability

Someone who is financially responsible will always consider the cost of living foremost. Cities that contain a high population of millennials often have low employment rates and affordability. If the city is popular but does not meet within millennial’s budget, then it wouldn’t be worth the cost. Money is the only physical asset that holds us restricted. The city of Camden holds that title of affordability. Tax cuts are what attracts entrepreneurs mainly, however the overall value of the stay is well worth it. Camden is located outside of Philadelphia, just close enough to go into their city to network without paying Philadelphia’s cost of living.

Entrepreneurship

Millennials are an ambitious generation. A reporting claimed that 54% have either wanted to start a business or have started one already. This characterized millennials as hard-working and motivated individuals. A location that showcases trails of entrepreneurship deliver a desirable reality to people. Silicon Valley embodies this example, as it is the most known startup hub for technology companies in America. Famous companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google are in that area, so the status of Silicon Valley is held at a high standard.

Another location that is maintaining that status is Camden. Due to Camden’s location outside of Philadelphia and surrounding fortune 500 companies, millennial entrepreneurs are inspired to bring their startup here. There are multiple different types of organizations located here with 76ers as one.

Millennials are attracted to cities that cater to their needs. About 66% of Millennials identified  decent quality transportation as a main influence to choosing a location to live. People typically pick the option that meets their social needs. To obtain that, a low cost transit is ideally looked for in a city. Cities with an ineffective quality transit fail to attract Millennials.

This will replace the baby boomers, who have been recorded as the largest generation in the workforce. This instant switch leaves other generations questioning their management. Millennials are the generation born after year 1982 and before 2004. This was essentially the era of technology beginnings. To be raised in the ever changing state of development, this generation foresees big things for the digital future. This need for rapid growth has created various platforms for creators, entrepreneurs, and more. Millennials have a profound belief that technology is the future, and so we should precisely use it to our advantage. Networking has been perfected with Linkedin, while Youtube is colonized by content creators, and Slack has better connected employees.

Millennials were born to alternate between innovation and tradition. To be raised in the era of constant development, generation Y has cultivated the skill to be open to change. Arguably, change is intended for growth, so that is how Millennials greet it. The digital age has disrupted traditional systems for the better, a concept that was impossible in the past. Due to the inconsistency they’ve experienced growing up, millennials have subdue their harsh conditions by advocating innovation. Although innovation is a new idea, generation Y strictly believes this is an optimal lifestyle.

Work/life balance has never been more popular. Millennials work better in a flexible environment. If there is a large workload for the day, they may prefer to work from home or come in at different times. Figure out a schedule that works best with your employee’s personal life as well as work life. With technology, work is easily accessible through phones and laptops. Not every worker may want to work from a remote location. Some prefer to start the day later and stay later. Switching up the schedule can have a positive impact on your business.

 

Frequent feedback

Constructive feedback helps millennials gauge how they are doing and how they can improve. You may think millennials crave freedom, but they need direction just as much. Employees want to know how they can improve and do their job better. Some employers give evaluations every 6 months, but it may be beneficial to do it every 3 months instead. Millennials are committed to their careers and are focused on doing what it takes to get that promotion.

 

Be authentic

If you haven’t figured it out already, millennials have zero tolerance for all things inauthentic. They value colleagues that treat them with respect and gravitate towards supervisors that are relatable. But, don’t be fake. Referencing memes that you know nothing about or talking about Pokémon that your employees stopped caring for will only make things awkward.

 

Create a fun culture

Having a great culture will keep millennials at your company longer than being a boring 9-to-5. You don’t have to be Google to have office perks. Sometimes, it takes as little as a pizza party. Millennials want to create genuine long lasting relationships in their lifetime. Sitting in a cubicle exiled from the world will chip away any remnants of company culture. Consider a more open office atmosphere. It will create opportunities to collaborate and not only will they be happy, your business will flourish.
