Making your customers feel appreciated without sounding creepy and desperate can help your business stand out from the competition. According to research a simple “thank you” makes customers spend more and employees accomplish more. Vendors also pay on time if you thank them regularly. To Reference Gary Vaynerchuk’s acclaimed book, “The Thank You Economy”, “the companies that can figure out how to mind their manners in a very old-fashioned way — and do it authentically — are going to have a prayer of competing in business”.

So how do we harness the power of Thank You? Here are some great examples on how to thank your employees, suppliers and customers all year round:

Be Sincere

If you don’t mean it, don’t say it. Saying thank you after a purchase can make customers feel appreciated. The same is true when you say it to employees who do a good job. However, if you go say thank you to everybody over every little thing then it might sound phony. Customers and employees know when you’re being sincere or not. Your appreciation has to be heartfelt or else it won’t work.

Add Real Value

Customers are what make businesses successful. If you don’t have customers then you don’t have a business. To make them feel appreciated, thank them by hosting a customer appreciation day or something similar where they get big discounts or giveaways for loyal customers. This should not be your typical 5% off on selected items or free shipping for $50 and up. This should be an all out thank you event where you give big discounts or offer free shipping for all online purchases. Why? Because sometimes words aren’t enough.

Personalize It

Loyal customers should be appreciated personally. Sometimes, when you say thank you regularly, it becomes automatic so there’s really no distinction between your loyal customers and walk-ins. Make your loyal fans feel appreciated by saying thank you personally. You can send them hand-written thank you notes instead of the usual thank-you-for-patronizing-us-email. A personal touch says that you took the time out of your busy schedule to write them a note to convey your sincere appreciation.

Think Outside The Box

Sometimes, a note just won’t cut it. You need an edge not only to show appreciation but to differentiate your business from other businesses that say thank you too. Instead of sending them the usual thank you note or package, think outside the box by sending them geo-specific gifts. If you’re from Wisconsin for example, send them a selection of your state’s fine cheeses for those in California, locally grown wine from Napa Valley. When you send unique thank you gifts, your customers will remember you when it’s time to take out their wallets.

Thank Angry Customers Too

Angry and disgruntled customers took time to call you to complain and tell you why they’re angry or dissatisfied. You can either feel embarrassed because you were unable to satisfy them or take their complaint as feedback so you can do better next time. Some customers who complain mean that they are still willing to do business with you if you are able to fix the problem. Therefore you should thank them for the feedback and their input on how you can avoid making the same mistake in the future. A complaint is an opportunity to improve relationships and win your customer back. Instead of looking at complaints as something negative; look at it in an opportunity to make things right.

Some of your most loyal customers are not only customers. They are also your brand ambassadors, online sharers, followers and fans. They have the power to recommend your business or tear it down. Showing them appreciation no matter how small can go a long way and can help you interact with customers and get to know them better. Saying thank you can help you stand out and get repeat business.

The most infamous city to reach Amazon’s shortlist is New York, New York. The crowded city has an established tech industry and competitive business environment. Respectable companies from all types of industries race for a spot in New York. NYC, or in other terms, ‘the big apple’ is a staple to business activities in America. Even though NYC is not offering any financial incentives other than what is already provided to companies in their city, the new Amazon headquarters will be impacted heavily if they choose New York. Amazon will be more innovative due to the support of this city. 

Possible locations include the Midtown West, the Financial District, the Brooklyn Tech Triangle, and Long Island City. There is about 8.5 to 26 million square feet of space being offered to Amazon from these potential areas. If these locations are not appealing enough, there is an additional and unique opportunity at hand. Charles J Urstadt, a real estate investor proposes to build the Amazon headquarters in the Hudson river. The new Amazon headquarters would pay a nominal price of $5 million for the land extending 1,000 feet into the river. This site is named cheaper by Urstadt, but he hopes that Bezos views it that way too.

The area is flooded with international airports like John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. This move can be an opportunity to introduce the company into the East-Coast. The first impression will be a boost if the most influential city of America (New York) is representing the tech company.

The city collects students from the most prestigious colleges in Columbia University, Barnard College, New York University, and Fordham University. NYU Stern and Columbia University are ranked as the most difficult school to get into. These business and tech professionals are more than qualified to be employed in the tech company of Amazon. The unexpected city to be on Amazon’s top 20 short-list is Miami,Florida. Information about the proposal for Amazon has yet to be released. South Florida is currently keeping it a secret, but from the looks of the region, Florida holds the best benefits. Florida has no state income tax, which can save Amazon a lot of money. The founder of Amazon holds personal ties with the city as well. CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos spent some time in the Miami area. He spent his childhood there and was valedictorian of his class at Palmetto High in 1982. Bezos now has the opportunity to return to dominate the corporate scene of the region. Florida may be the perfect choice for Amazon HQ2.

The massive tech company seeks a city with a high population in order to attract employees. Miami holds a population of 453,579 people and is growing. The location is perfect in size and the site holds special features. The area will cover the southern-region for Amazon, but is still remotely close to the East Coast. South Florida is also a pipeline for Amazon to connect with Latin America. This represents a positive, diverse company. The southern location also emphasizes the importance of weather forecast. South Florida embodies the perfect temperature for businesses. There won’t be any delay due to snow or low temperature, so traveling and delivery will hardly get affected.

Amazon is currently looking to adopt 500,000 square feet of space but will then move on to consume a total of 8 million square feet after 2027. South Florida had offered at least eight sites that is located in downtown Miami. Other locations include government buildings, so in total there are five in Miami-Dad, two in Broward, and another in Palm Beach. Florida had planned out this move drastically and is offering various options to fit the taste of Amazon.

The University of Miami and Florida International University are within the region, along with other colleges. The region attracts a younger scene, which is beneficial to companies seeking employment. Miami also provides the Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport to Amazon for transportation.

“There are a lot of cities that are showing off for Amazon … We took a different approach. We put out a challenge,” Commissioner Russell said. The message of the video, he said: Miami isn’t for everybody and if you are not welcoming of diversity, don’t come. “We believe that will resonate with Amazon because they do embrace a lot of the values that we have in Miami and they will recognize how this is really a jumping off point not only for South America but for Europe and the world.”

Why Amazon HQ2 Should Choose Dallas

Dallas made it on the shortlist for Amazon to build their second headquarters. Though they are up against 19 other cities including Atlanta, Boston, and Chicago. Amazon’s requirements include a metropolitan area with over a million people, be 45 minutes from an international airport, direct access to public transportation, and be able to expand 8 million square feet in the next decade. Amazon HQ2 will be diving deeper with each of the finalists to evaluate each proposal before making a final decision. They encouraged the top 20 finalists to go through this process in secrecy.

“We’re proud of the great work done by our regional cities and leaders,” said Mike Rosa, senior vice president of economic development at the Dallas Regional Chamber. “We’re looking forward to the next steps and are in direct contact with Amazon to begin that process.”

Amazon is planning $5 billion in infrastructure with the first building opening in 2019. The online retailer will employ 50,000 people with an average salary of $100,000 or more at the new campus. The sites proposed included downtown Dallas skyscrapers, Victory Park, multiple locations in Collin County, property on the University of Texas at Dallas campus, and another at the station of the planned bullet train connecting Dallas and Houston. In Tarrant County, potential sites include a future Trinity River development north of downtown Fort Worth, and 800 acres in Grapevine on Dallas Fort Worth International Airport property. Dallas kept quiet about the tax incentives that were offered to Amazon.
