Leadership Qualities You Need To Have

Published

on

leadership

Leadership is an inborn quality, but some refinement and knowledge will always be needed to enhance this unique talent. If you want to be a great leader, evaluate your abilities and address the areas that require improvement. Some people also believe that leadership is an attained knowledge which becomes programmed and instinctive over time. Here are some key leadership qualities that can help you to become a true leader and gain respect at your workplace.

Be A Role Model

Leading by example is not as easy as it sounds. Successful leaders always maintain a balance between their actions and what they preach. You need to be consistent in your actions to project positivity and become a role model at the workplace. Set the right expectations and highlight what’s expected by clearly establishing a code of conduct. Encourage your teammates to follow the established rules and never break the code of conduct.

Be Humble

You need to gain the respect of your colleagues and teammates. If you want to establish a strong bond with your crew, try to be humble. Share the credit of success with your team members and if you commit a mistake, admit it. If you admit your mistake, your employees feel confident to disclose theirs thereby bringing in transparency. Unnecessary ‘blame game’ can ruin the environment and work culture of the workplace.

Be An Effective Communicator

Do not intimidate your colleagues or employees with your title or power, rather be approachable to them. Give them a patient hearing when they discuss workplace issues and preserve the confidentiality of such conversations. Do not jump to immediate conclusions and communicate your stand in a wrong way. Set your expectations from the team upfront and make a note of all the important discussions. If any misunderstandings crop up in the organization, try to settle them through the right communication channel. Heated arguments and insulting people should be avoided at any cost. Remember, every problem can be solved in a professional way if you are capable enough to do it.

Encourage Creativity

Inspire your team to think creatively and give them some positive inputs and feedback. If you encourage your team to come up with some innovative ideas and give them an opportunity to showcase their ideas, you will earn enormous respect from the team. The team will also become more confident and committed towards the organization. Reward creative ideas and innovations. It will eventually improve the problem-solving ability and productivity of the team.

Challenge Your Employees

Great leaders know how to bring out the best results from the team. They are excellent observers and study the capabilities and mindsets of the teammates. As a leader, encourage them to think. Thinking leads to learning and innovation which is the basis of survival in this competitive world. Dynamic employees get bored if they constantly work under similar circumstances and are stuck in a monotonous job. As a leader, you need to find out such talented employees and challenge them to think out of the box and give them some fresh air. It is a part of continuous learning and symbiotic growth. However, you need to demarcate thresholds and provide them with challenges that are achievable within their limits. Over-burdening, an individual beyond his capacity, leads to frustration and failure.

Review And Reward

Great leaders lead from the front. They should always have a careful eye on the overall performance of the business. Never forget to praise an individual or a team effort when you review successful projects. Rewards for consistent performers encourage others to give their best. If any project does not meet your expectation, give the team some tips to improve. The correct decisions and correcting measures taken by the leader play a pivotal role in the progress of the company.

8 Easy Habits To Adopt In Your Workplace To Boost Your Health

Published

boost your health

Working a desk job is not the best for your health. However, many jobs require work on the computer that it feels unavoidable. If you work at a desk in an office, there are things you can do to boost your health physically and mentally. You may not be able to completely ditch your desk, but you can create a more health friendly environment in the office.

Clean your desk

desk

How are you with distractions? Are you someone who is bothered by every little sound or are you someone who would not notice if the filing cabinet was engulfed in flames? Just because you can work in a messy environment, doesn’t mean you should. Walking into a neat cubicle or office will help you remain on task and complete your work. Wiping down your keyboard and mouse will help prevent the spread of germs. Keeping your drawers organized will make locating paperwork more automated and will save time and drama. The same can be said about organizing your desktop. Keeping well-labeled documents and files on your desktop helps you navigate your computer quickly. That way, the next time someone emails you one minute after they need something emailed to them, you can drag and drop without a second thought!

Stock up on healthy snacks

Health habits

Healthy snacks sometimes feels like an oxymoron in a work setting. The standard snacks in offices are often leftover bags of chips, cookies, and soda from conferences and meetings. When that afternoon energy crash comes your way, you may be inclined to reach for some type of caffeine and a sugary or crunchy snack. To avoid the draw of Doritos in the break room, stock up on your own snacks to boost your health. If you are looking for crunchy, try some hummus and veggies or trail mix. If you looking for a sweet treat, reach for a piece of fruit and pair it with yogurt or nut butter for more satiety. Many healthy snacks can be purchased pre-portioned so you won’t be tempted to mindlessly devour a whole jar of peanut butter at your desk.

Bring your reusable water bottle

water bottle

If your workplace has a filtered water dispenser or a classic water cooler, you can use your breaks to walk over and hydrate. By bringing your own water bottle, you can reduce waste and monitor your water intake. If you use a smaller water bottle, it will allow you more opportunities to get up and fill up. If you use a huge bottle, you may be getting your steps in on the way to the restroom. Either way, stay staying hydrated is super important if you want to boost your health.

Set timers and get up

regain confidence

People only have so much mental stamina when it comes to tasks. Setting timers is something that can help motivate you to completely dedicate yourself to a single project. When you know you only have 30 minutes of concentrated effort before you earn a break, it becomes easier to power through. When the timer goes off, give yourself a five minute break to walk around, stretch, or use the restroom. Use the break to tear yourself away from the screen and give your eyes a rest. This habit helps break up the day and drives productivity.

Headphones On Om

Working at a desk could have you feeling super plugged in all the time. This is a fact of the current workplace and it is pretty unavoidable. A lot of people turn to playlists and podcasts to get into their flow state. It is important to be mindful about what you are listening to. There are a ton of apps and podcasts that offer guided meditation and motivational soundtracks. You do not need 8 hours of guided meditation everyday but it is nice to break-up the trap music with some super positive vibes and take time to breathe and be in your body.

Ditch take out

morning rituals of entrepreneurs

While healthier options at restaurants are on the rise, packing your lunch is still the way to go. This is a habit that starts at home and carries over to the office. By bringing your lunch, you can tell exactly what is in it, control the portions you eat, and save some money. Eating complete meals that include protein and healthy carbs and fat can help your energy levels remain steady throughout the day. If you need more meal prep ideas to boost your health, you can find them here.

Eat somewhere else

smart food

Whether you pack your lunch or pick something up, try to sit somewhere that is not your desk. Aside from the fact that your keyboard and desk is really germy, it is just healthier all around to have a designated eating area. If your work doesn’t have a designated eating area, maybe you can duck into an open office or conference room. When the weather is nice you can try to get outside and boost your Vitamin D. Bonus points for inviting your coworkers and having a face-to-face conversation with them instead of messaging them back and forth on G-Chat.

Stand, Sit, Walk?

Vanguard

Desks are becoming more versatile these days. You don’t have to sit all day anymore! If you work from home, your desk situation may be more mobile, but office workers may not have that flexibility. Many offices are encouraging employees to get desks that adjust between sitting and standing. You may even work somewhere that allows desk treadmills to boost your health. Even if sitting is your only option, there are free online guides and resources on how to adjust your posture to alleviate neck and back pain.

First Tech Startup to join Camden NJ

Penji is a new tech startup who recently launched in Camden NJ. Instead of having costly all-inclusive packages that design agencies typically offer, Penji offers unlimited graphic design, unlimited revisions, at a flat monthly rate. The startup launched on October 21st 2017, a day after Camden Catalyst, a startup pitch competition hosted by Waterfront Ventures to bring startups into the city.

Penji solves a unique problem that startups, small businesses, and agencies tend to have. According to Penji, startups and small business owners spend too much of their time attempting to design their own marketing materials, logos, business cards, etc. And even if they hire a company or a freelancer to help them, it often costs quite a bit more than they originally thought.

” It’s a huge time waster. And that’s why we created Penji, to solve that graphic design problem for startups and small businesses.” – Johnathan Grzybowski (Cofounder)

Penji’s unique mission

Penji also has a unique mission. The startup plans to be one of the first community conscious startups to plant their flag in Camden NJ. For Penji, being a community conscious startup means giving back to their community on a consistent basis and in ways that truly helps their community. The startup plans to offer jobs and opportunities specifically for students and residents in Camden. Their goal is to hire as many talents as they can from the city with the hope of keeping those talents in Camden. Camden is home to major school institutions such as Rutgers, Rowan, Camden County, and Cooper. Despite having these big names investing in the city, few job opportunities currently exist for students graduating from any of these 4 colleges.

“The only way to successfully revitalize Camden sustainably is if our students are willing to stay in the city and invest in the city themselves. And they can only do that if there are good paying jobs available in Camden. Currently there aren’t many available, and we plan to change that.”- Khai Tran

Penji

The startup already hired 4 students from Camden and have plans to hire more as they grow in Camden. Things are definitely looking up for Camden NJ as the interests for startups are growing from surrounding cities. The Camden city has been struggling with bringing in new businesses for the past few decades and many efforts have been put forth to revitalize the city. Things may be different this time around if enough startup companies join Penji in Camden and invest in the city.

Melissa Le (office manager of Waterfront Lab, Camden’s very own co-working space) is optimistic that Camden will be revitalized this time around.

“We’re feeling good about Camden’s revitalization and we know it will be successful if enough key industries get involved. Having major companies such as American Water, Holtec, and Subaru is a great start, however we need more interests from startups and small businesses to make Camden’s growth sustainable.”
