Things You Must Do When Pitching Investors

Published

Pitching investors

Pitching investors will inevitably be a path many entrepreneurs will tread. Pitching is not just for entrepreneurs looking for money. Most of us at different points in our lives have experienced pitching for a proposal we want to happen. Whether it is getting mom to buy us tickets to a band’s concert or getting approval for a loan, a successful pitch is composed of the same elements. Here are points to follow to get that perfect pitch.

Get To The Point Quickly

Attention spans are getting shorter and shorter, especially when pitching investors. This is especially true for the new generation who are used to everything on-demand. Many things are becoming minimal, whether it is blogs, the news report, or websites. So as not to lose their attention, get to your point quickly and succinctly. Use Harvard’s Elevator Pitch Builder which gives you a minute to explain yourself, your goals and your business. Also, make sure your presentation is dynamic and lively. This article here teaches you everything you need to know about making that presentation go wild.

Use Less Slides When Pitching Investors

Since attention is getting shorter and you need to get to the point quickly, don’t use too many slides. Limit your slides to 10 if possible. The fewer slides you use, the quicker your presentation will be, which will keep you from going astray. Use downloadable ready-made slide decks.

Establish A Need

The best products that sell are those that are needed. When giving a presentation always answer the question “What problem does that solve?”. Convince the audience that there is a need by giving them a problem and telling them that you have the solution.

Message Map

For complex pitches, use the message map, a tool that will help you convey your idea simply and quickly. It helps explain an idea visually, all in one page in just 15 seconds. It involves a Twitter friendly headline, 3 benefits that support the headline and reinforcement of the 3 benefits.

Multi-Level Structure

Scott Berkun, author of How to Pitch Your Idea, recommends using 3 levels for your pitch: 5 seconds to explain your idea in one sentence, 30 seconds to explain to the audience how to achieve your plan. Once they understand this, use 5 minutes to broaden it so that they can get a clearer idea of what you’re proposing.

Competitive Advantage

Identify who your competition is and tell the audience your competitive advantage. Show them why your idea or product is better than what your competitor is offering. It is also a good idea to tell the audience who the potential entrants are and what you’re doing to shield against them.

Catchphrase

Include a catchphrase when pitching a product. The Macbook Air for example was “the world’s thinnest notebook” when first introduced. A catchphrase will help people and the audiences remember your product. Developing a good catch phrase is a huge part of developing your brand’s message. Learn more on reinforcing your brand here.

The Team

Listeners and investors like to know that you have a good solid team behind you. When pitching investors, make sure you also show them confidence by introducing your team. You can introduce them at the beginning or end of your pitch. Don’t go into every single detail about them. Focus on the highs and relevant accomplishments of team members. Building a dream team is critical for your success, check this article out to learn how to build that dream team!

Know When To Stop Selling

Learn to read the signs on when to stop selling. Pitching investors doesn’t always mean you have to be constantly selling the whole time. A good salesperson knows when the idea has hit home. When you continue to talk beyond this point you could say something that could reverse the positive direction of the pitch. To learn more about selling, check out this article here.

Don’t Beg

There is a fine line between showing passion for your idea and begging listeners to like it. A little nervousness is expected but adopting an attitude of begging does not serve well. If you feel that your idea has merit, pitch like you believe in it without sounding arrogant or obnoxious. Hone your pitching skills by watching shows like Shark Tank or Dragon’s Den.

Deliver a pitch that instills confidence in your team and communicate your idea with clarity. If you are able to do this, then you are on your way to a successful pitch.

Why Amazon Headquarters Should Choose New York

Published

Amazon Headquarters

The most infamous city to reach Amazon’s shortlist is New York, New York. The crowded city has an established tech industry and competitive business environment. Respectable companies from all types of industries race for a spot in New York. NYC, or in other terms, ‘the big apple’ is a staple to business activities in America. Even though NYC is not offering any financial incentives other than what is already provided to companies in their city, the new Amazon headquarters will be impacted heavily if they choose New York. Amazon will be more innovative due to the support of this city.

Possible locations include the Midtown West, the Financial District, the Brooklyn Tech Triangle, and Long Island City. There is about 8.5 to 26 million square feet of space being offered to Amazon from these potential areas. If these locations are not appealing enough, there is an additional and unique opportunity at hand. Charles J Urstadt, a real estate investor proposes to build the Amazon headquarters in the Hudson river. The new Amazon headquarters would pay a nominal price of $5 million for the land extending 1,000 feet into the river. This site is named cheaper by Urstadt, but he hopes that Bezos views it that way too.

The area is flooded with international airports like John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. This move can be an opportunity to introduce the company into the East-Coast. The first impression will be a boost if the most influential city of America (New York) is representing the tech company.

The city collects students from the most prestigious colleges in Columbia University, Barnard College, New York University, and Fordham University. NYU Stern and Columbia University are ranked as the most difficult school to get into. These business and tech professionals are more than qualified to be employed in the tech company of Amazon. The city offers the most reliable employees to help grow Amazon and New York.

The New York has a pool of diverse cultures, from influences in fashion, entertainment, business, technology, and more. This can contribute immensely to the innovative company. Amazon already sees great potential in New York as there are traces of Amazon doing business in NYC currently. The tech innovative company occupies about 855,000 square foot of space for a distribution center in Staten Island. Also an additional seven floors in a Manhattan Tower for workers in finance, sales, and marketing.

There are also other many more agencies that do not believe New York is the right fit. “I’m one who doesn’t think it is good idea for NYC. Housing prices are too high as is and infrastructure can’t handle the traffic etc that we already have.  50k new employees etc will simply exacerbate the situation. I respect other points of view but not a good fit for us”, says Rob Key of Converseon

HQ2

The unexpected city to be on Amazon’s top 20 short-list is Miami,Florida. Information about the proposal for Amazon has yet to be released. South Florida is currently keeping it a secret, but from the looks of the region, Florida holds the best benefits. Florida has no state income tax, which can save Amazon a lot of money. The founder of Amazon holds personal ties with the city as well. CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos spent some time in the Miami area. He spent his childhood there and was valedictorian of his class at Palmetto High in 1982. Bezos now has the opportunity to return to dominate the corporate scene of the region. Florida may be the perfect choice for Amazon HQ2.

The massive tech company seeks a city with a high population in order to attract employees. Miami holds a population of 453,579 people and is growing. The location is perfect in size and the site holds special features. The area will cover the southern-region for Amazon, but is still remotely close to the East Coast. South Florida is also a pipeline for Amazon to connect with Latin America. This represents a positive, diverse company. The southern location also emphasizes the importance of weather forecast. South Florida embodies the perfect temperature for businesses. There won’t be any delay due to snow or low temperature, so traveling and delivery will hardly get affected.

Amazon is currently looking to adopt 500,000 square feet of space but will then move on to consume a total of 8 million square feet after 2027. South Florida had offered at least eight sites that is located in downtown Miami. Other locations include government buildings, so in total there are five in Miami-Dad, two in Broward, and another in Palm Beach. Florida had planned out this move drastically and is offering various options to fit the taste of Amazon.

The University of Miami and Florida International University are within the region, along with other colleges. The region attracts a younger scene, which is beneficial to companies seeking employment. Miami also provides the Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport to Amazon for transportation.

“There are a lot of cities that are showing off for Amazon … We took a different approach. We put out a challenge,” Commissioner Russell said. The message of the video, he said: Miami isn’t for everybody and if you are not welcoming of diversity, don’t come. “We believe that will resonate with Amazon because they do embrace a lot of the values that we have in Miami and they will recognize how this is really a jumping off point not only for South America but for Europe and the world.”

Small businesses and agencies within Columbus are able share their professional insight to Amazon now. This is why Amazon HQ2 Should Choose Miami:

How will Amazon HQ2 affect the economy of the city?

“Beyond the short-term construction and long-term full-time job direct economic benefits, delivering such a high-visibility endorsement of South Florida as the diverse, international and “enterprise-ready” region that is has become, would create the momentum needed for long-term prosperity. South Florida is about so much more than beaches and cruises and bringing HQ2 would reinforce that message for decades”. -Aaron Lee of The iluma Agency.

Amazon is searching for talent in software development and related fields. What is your city’s tech scene like?

“South Florida has seen a vast expansion of tech startups, incubator programs and higher education development. In fact, the 2017 Kauffman Index of Startup Activity recognized South Florida as the leading region for startup activity, ahead of Austin. As the President of the South Florida Chapter of the Entrepreneur’s Organization, I can also attest to our region’s thriving tech and entrepreneurship scene first hand. Our chapter is among the top 10 largest worldwide and continues to grow with mature, scaling businesses as well. Considering that Amazon is much more than just an online store, we also offer one of the few direct backbones to the global internet, right here in Miami. Finally, it’s no accident that several “unicorn” tech startups are based here already, including MagicLeap”. -Aaron Lee of The iluma Agency.

How will the community welcome Amazon HQ2?

“Not with a parade, but with an unforgettable beach party. Seriously though, there is a unified and aligned vision across three counties and more than 9 million residents who are ready to embrace and support Amazon. We are also a perfect region for Amazon to test new innovations and reach a global audience, not just a domestic one. Our businesses, residents, organizations and local governments have spent years investing in ourselves to prepare for such an opportunity”. -Aaron Lee of The iluma Agency.

Do you support the major’s proposal? Why, or why not?

“Absolutely. As a business owner and South Florida resident for nearly 4 decades, I have the shared opinion that our area has more of a branding problem for enterprise business, versus a lack of opportunity and infrastructure. We have been ready for Amazon HQ2 since before it was an idea”. -Aaron Lee of The iluma Agency.

Besides financial incentives, what does your city offer?

“South Florida offers a diverse metropolitan culture that combines international influences with a rich history of hard working, but equally fun loving people. We thrive on our diversity and it’s a community that celebrates living. From the arts, sports, entertainment and of course the fabulous weather and beaches, there’s no other part of America like it”. -Aaron Lee of The iluma Agency.

HQ2

What is in your city that isn’t found anywhere else?

“I’d have to say that the rich diversity of our people has helped build a community that reflects the global world we live in today. It’s a region that also reflects the nature of Amazon’s vision and scale as well. We are a city of the world, built by people who have come together from all around it, sharing their culture and experiences to create something truly unique”. -Aaron Lee of The iluma Agency.
